As parents we are always looking out for our children’s future. At best education is one of our main concerns. With the current situation, most schooling has been interrupted and with exams nearing us we fear that some of our children might not be promoted to the next grade in 2021. We all want to help our children excel in their studies without exerting too much pressure on them, finding that balance can be hard sometimes. So here are a few things to consider, points that can help you support your child with their studies:

Remember your child is probably feeling anxious themselves, and the best way to help them is to lead by example. Show your child how to react positively in a stressful situation. Keeping calm and affirming ‘’I know I am feeling nervous, but I will try my best”, will go a long way. These are words they can use forever, anxiety is something we will always have to deal with.

As I mentioned before some schooling has been interrupted and we are all aware that some children may be falling behind. With that being said help your child have clear expectations. I know they say reach for the stars but before you learn to fly you first need to run. Make sure you are not just helping them cram, I would rather have them take their time and grasp the concept, rather than to load them with information they cannot comprehend. Remember education is not a race, it is a journey.

While you are helping them prepare, remember to be there for them emotionally. Teachers and tutors can give them all the knowledge but a parents involvement needs to be more nurturing. Encourage your child to talk about their feelings, listen to them and be empathetic. Remember this is stressful for them and they need you to be there for them.

I know you are wondering where the part is where I tell you to download tutorial videos for them and print out revision worksheets. For me that is standard and something we all focus on, what stands out for me is the emotional side of the situation. Let’s not forget to be our children’s cheerleaders. Let them know that you are there for them, that you will always support and love them. Knowing that there is someone supporting them will help build confidence and determination to succeed. Behind every excelling pupil is a supportive parent.
